Lufthansa is seeking temporary injunctions in an effort to stop the costly and lengthy strike affecting thousands of flights and hundreds of thousands of passengers as the\u00a0industrial dispute<\/a>\u00a0with the cabin crew union entered its fourth day and promises more havoc before it ends, which likely won\u2019t be earlier than\u00a0Friday. After four days of walkouts\u00a0that have resulted in more than 2,700 flights cancellations, Europe\u2019s\u00a0biggest airline\u00a0announced that it had filed the legal actions\u00a0in Germany\u2019s\u00a0labor courts and both sides said on Tuesday that they are open to\u00a0mediation in what\u2019s becoming the longest strike in its history.<\/p>\n

Lufthansa announced that it has cancelled 930 flights scheduled for Wednesday which will affect 100,000 travelers.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0On Tuesday, the strike hit 136 flights and 27,300 passengers, a day before it had grounded 929 flights affecting\u00a0113,000 passengers. The company said Tuesday that it had offered the\u00a0Independent Flight Attendants Organization<\/a>\u00a0(UFO)\u00a0a new proposal with improved bonuses and retirement provisions \u201cin order that our customers are not penalized by the effects of this strike.\u201d But UFO quickly\u00a0rejected\u00a0the latest offer, arguing it had\u00a0failed to address the critical issue of retirement, which has become the most intractable point through\u00a0the long negotiations.<\/a>\u00a0The union also said it hasn\u2019t weakened\u00a0its resolve to maintain\u00a0the walkouts both on short- and long-haul flights to and from\u00a0Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich airports, Lufthansa\u2019s three\u00a0main hubs, from 3 a.m. GMT on Wednesday through 11 p.m.\u00a0GMT on Friday.<\/p>\n

This is the first time that UFO, representing 19,000 flight attendants, has participated in an industrial action, of which there have\u00a0been more than a dozen over\u00a0the past year,\u00a0most of them headed by the pilots union, the\u00a0Vereinigung Cockpit VC<\/a>. In an unrelated development,\u00a0the pilots\u00a0union has\u00a0announced that it has filed a legal challenge to an earlier\u00a0court ruling that forced it\u00a0to suspend its most recent\u00a0strike in\u00a0September. The ongoing disputes over pay and early retirement date back to 2013, when the company started an ambitious cost-cutting plan to help it compete against\u00a0low-cost carriers. Despite the ongoing strikes and negotiations, the company announced last week that it was raising its forecast for the year thanks to higher third quarter profits due to low oil prices and healthy\u00a0tickets sales. Nevertheless, the company\u2019s shares were down 1.6%. So far,\u00a0the ongoing labor strife\u00a0already has cost Lufthansa\u00a0more than\u00a0\u20ac130 million this year \u2013 while the current action is racking up \u20ac10 million in losses per day.<\/p>\n
