Fewer\u00a0than a quarter of shippers are \u201cvery happy\u201d with the air cargo supply chain\u00a0\u2013 there are\u00a0continuing demands for less\u00a0complexity and paper.<\/p>\n

In an IATA shippers poll, just 22% said they were \u201cvery happy\u201d, and while overall the industry scored a 7\/10, 85% of respondents called for more\u00a0collaboration.<\/p>\n

Head of cargo transformation Celina Hourcade said the results indicated the need to modernise the industry was paramount.
\n\u201cOur Simplifying the Business (StB) cargo programme is aimed at achieving exactly this, and adapting to the modern industry,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cOur first point is to adopt the voice of the shipper and, from what we have heard, what shippers want is less paper and less complexity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also want an air cargo sector that can anticipate their needs amid rapid developments.\u201d<\/p>\n

To achieve this, IATA is looking at a way to standardise processes across the entire airfreight supply chain.
\nDespite only a small number of respondents willing to give the highest marks, Ms Hourcade said confidence in the sector remained high.\u00a0She pointed to 69% of respondents who claimed airfreight was equally, or more, competitive than other modes of transport.<\/p>\n

The StB programme has six goals: capitalise on e-commerce; \u201cembrace a full digital cargo philosophy\u201d by moving to data-on-demand; develop real-time interaction \u2013 \u201cshippers want instant gratification\u201d; make quality \u201crelevant\u201d; optimise the end-to-end journey; and modernise distribution.<\/p>\n

Ms Hourcade said \u201cinteractive cargo\u201d is one project the association was currently working on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe purpose of this is to make cargo \u2018talk\u2019, with tracking at piece level. To some extent this is already available, but our aim is to make it industry-wide,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will employ sensors and data loggers \u2013 but there are still questions to be asked around who owns the data.\u00a0Will it be the shipper or the device manufacturer? Or will it be the airlines when it is in airline hands?\u201d<\/p>\n

For the moment, Ms Hourcade said, there\u00a0were no\u00a0concrete answers, and questions still lingered over the certification process.
\n\u201cEach device needs to be certified by the individual airlines as, under our idea, it will be the shipper that installs the device.\u201d<\/p>\n
