45′ Shipping Containers have become popular in intra-European trades for intermodal transport and therefore deserve particular attention to communicate their technical specifications to the trade. PHOENIX maintains regular weekly services with 45′ containers, where a wide rande of industries resort for their freight.
At just over 10% larger in length than its 40 foot counterpart, a 45′ shipping container is one of the internationally standardized ISO 6346 sizes of intermodal container.
The other standard ISO container lengths are 20, 40, 48 and 53 feet. Non-standardized containers also exist usually in 10 and 30′ container dimensions.
There are several types of shipping containers that are supplied in 45′ lengths:
- 45′ standard dry cargo containers
- 45′ high cube containers
- 45′ refrigerated containers (known as ‘reefers‘)
As such they are extremely popular in intermodal freight and ocean shipping. Most common in this size, however is the 45 high cube.
The next largest size is the 48 foot container while the next smallest is the 40′ container.
These sized containers have also become popular with those specialising in cargo container homes. The most attractive architectural container home designs are often configured with several containers of varying dimensions and sizes.

Below we have provided imperial shipping container dimensions for the most common type of container in this length – the high cube.

Most shipping container companies only supply 45 high cube containers (that is with an extra foot of internal height when compared to standard dry cargo containers.
45′ Reefer Container
Although less common than 20 foot and 40 foot reefers, some suppliers may also offer a 45′ version.
Usually, however, a slightly smaller 40 foot refrigerated container will suffice.
